I've been on a Splatterhouse kick lately, (partly fueled by the reboot of the franchise that Namco is due to release later this year), and a Splatterhouse fan for a loooong time. Part of my motivation for doing this piece is some of the weird character design they've gone with for the new reboot (although it sounds like Bottlerocket is no longer finishing the game, wonder what that will do to what we've seen so far). I was a little frustrated with how the game was looking and really hoping they just didn't add a 'metal' soundtrack - yes I like Mastodon, but I like Splatterhouse. Nuff said.

I really hope they don't screw this game up, and I hope they keep the frantic, 80's splatter horror creature fest feel to this game. And I really, REALLY, hope they keep the creepy music and the overall urgent scary vibe this game had, along with it's splat-tastic visceral gore & gameplay.



*For the uninitiated:

The game takes place in West Mansion (nicknamed the "Splatterhouse") where a parapsychologist, Dr. West, is rumoured to have conducted bizarre experiments. Dr. West has subsequently disappeared. Two university students — the series main character, Rick Taylor, and his girlfriend Jennifer Wills (both parapsychology majors) — visit the house for a school project, when a sudden thunderstorm causes them to seek shelter inside the mansion.

Inside, a scuffle with unseen enemies occurs, Rick is knocked unconscious and left for dead, while Jennifer is kidnapped. As Rick barely clings to life the "Terror Mask" (sometimes referred to as the "Terror Head", "Hell Mask", and in future game installments shortened to just "Mask") attaches itself to him. Rick wakes in a dungeon and finds that he cannot remove the Mask, which he recognises as an ancient Mayan sacrificial mask from West’s documents he had been studying. Discovering it gives him incredible strength, he decides to take advantage of its power and use it to rescue Jennifer.
